JB Opals is a small, family-run Australian business built on a simple idea: that a good opal should be bought the way it was found — one stone at a time, by someone who knows what they're looking at.

Every piece in our collection is chosen by hand and photographed by us before it appears on this site. We describe each stone as honestly as we can — its colour, its pattern, its quirks — because we would rather you know exactly what you're getting than be surprised when it arrives.

Australia produces the vast majority of the world's precious opal, and each field has its own character: the black opal of Lightning Ridge, the crystal and white opal of Coober Pedy and Andamooka, the boulder opal of Queensland. Part of the joy of opals is learning to read those differences, and we're always happy to talk you through them.

Each opal formed over millions of years, and no two are alike. When a piece finds its home, it leaves our collection for good — so if something here catches your eye, we hope you'll give it a closer look.
